This place is a FIND. One of those places you can't wait to return and tell your friends about. The location is close enough to the local restaurants/bars to walk, yet feels so well removed and tucked away. It has a quaint bar that we closed with the chef after dinner. The owner always had choice music playing. The breakfast that is included with your stay is made to order (you can choose from a menu of about 10 items), fresh, and incredible. I had a spinach and goat cheese omelette with pineapple juice and a pot of coffee. They had a great band on our second night nestled into the corner of the bar/restaurant. This was our first stay in Bar Harbor. We will be back and will return to the Black Friar inn to stay, eat, sleep, and drink!

We just ate here this evening and I am already talking about going back tomorrow. It's certainly "off the beaten track" of the regular bar harbor restaurant scene but certainly worth the walk over. We had two of the specials- linguini with seafood in a lobster sauce and the new York strip steak. Both incredible! Everyone working there was friendly and attentive. If I lived in bar harbor this would be my favorite restaurant/regular bar.

Went here for a late dinner and got a nice burger. Hubby's steak wasn't great and needed seasoning. The blueberry soda left a little to be desired. Honestly my favorite part of the meal was the old trivial pursuit cards on the table. Made for a fun way to pass the time while waiting on our food. Wait staff was friendly.

Ate here on a whim with wife, 9 year old son and 7 year old daughter. Tom and his wife were very hospitable and did my favorite thing - offered for the kids to hang in the basement with TV and games so we could enjoy our meal and some alone time. I had lobster Thermidor, my wife an excellent chicken salad and chicken with cheese, my daughter had a great burger but the star of the meal was my son's Maine wild blueberry pancakes made with buttermilk. Best pancake we ever tasted plus kids get breakfast for dinner. I tried all of the dishes and all were excellent but mine was a little light on the lobster. Eat here and you will not be disappointed but the dining room is small so make reservations. Oh yeah, the cocktails are great and they were nice enough to add plenty of vodka to my sons blueberry lemonade for dad when he did not want it. Nice touch.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights and we were so comfortable and cozy! We were a little nervous about staying at an inn instead of a hotel, but it was great and had all the amenities we needed. Breakfast was included in our room rate and was always very delicious and quite filling. Friar Tom, the owner, was always around if we had questions or needed anything and you can tell that the pub is a beloved place among locals. Great central location, within walking distance to all of downtown. Especially close to the low tide Bar Harbor trail out to the island. We definitely recommend the Black Friar Inn!

This review is for both the B&B and the restaurant. We loved it so much here we tried to book another day and cancel our plans for the next stop, but they were booked solid. So we will return to Maine, just because we had such a great time in Bar Harbor. We had room 4 and it was amazing. I'm picky about B&Bs because some smell musty, but it was very clean with well balanced decor (hip antiquey versus delicate). It has it's own bath with a skylight plus a skylight over the bed. If you need blackout darkness, you won't get it in this room, but the light glow was really pretty. But the best part of our room was up the spiral stairs to the sitting room which is a the top part of the house - the cupola room. Small high windows all around, a "wood" burning stove (but with a switch) and two oversized chairs. So cool. We had dinner in the restaurant which is a modern pub. I tried Jennifer's Friartini which is a Maine blueberry martini, super yum. Chef Don does a fantastic job with his dishes and we were both really happy. There was live music and it was a great dinner. Then we ran off to the Improv, see separate review. Breakfast is included with the room rate and you just ordered off the menu. My hubs had the blueberry pancakes and was very happy and I had the mixed platter. Very nice breakfast.

The only B&B with a full restaurant and bar in Bar Harbor...had a great Getty IPA on tap, a Lavender Lemonade, and a tasty cup of the Haddock Chowder. Better drop by soon, they close for the season just past mid-October until they reopen in May.

It was difficult trying to plan a trip to Bar Harbor from California. Having never been there, I didn't have the first clue for where to stay, the lay out of the town, etc. Several hours were spent looking at many, many hotel/motels in the area. One final search miraculously brought up the Black Friar Inn. This 6 bedroom inn is off the beaten path but only a couple blocks from the shopping/waterfront areas. We were lucky enough to score room #4 - a large, clean, quiet and sunny room that even has a spiral staircase leading to a private turret/reading room. The owner, Tom, was very helpful and having lived in Bar Harbor for many years was really helpful with information about not only the history of his inn (he bought it 5 years ago) but also things to do/see around town. Don, the cook, was super friendly and helpful as well. The inn also has a small pub on the first floor where breakfast is provided to guests free of charge. The blueberry pancakes were *fantastic* and must be tried whether you're staying at the inn or not. The dinner prices were reasonable and Don made a NY strip steak that my BF declared to be one of the best he's had in a long time. Dinner was so good we opted to return a second night instead of trying one of the many restaurants around town. The second night I skipped the lobster and tried their rosemary scallops. Don rocked yet another dinner. I'm SO glad we stumbled across this little gem and highly recommend either staying there or stopping by the restaurant if youre going to be in the area.

Thanks to a recommendation from a local, we stopped in after a rainy day of shopping. First off, the blueberry martini is a must and made with fresh blueberry puree. Delish! Whatever the chef's specials are, ORDER THEM! You won't be disappointed. By far, one of the best meals we've had to date on our visit to Maine!

Amazing breakfast- and all we had was eggs, potatoes and some meat. Very cute place, great service. If we ever come back to this town I will stop in again for breakfast!

Talk about Amazing!!! We had a wonderful time during our stay and everyone was soooo accomodating!! Chef Don did an exquisite job on breakfast every morning and he put up with our picky choices. We have been trying to eat well and avoid carbs and that was one reason we chose this B n B. We were able to order from the menu daily and substitute items as needed. Don always had coffee ready in the morning before breakfast and had great ideas for activities around the island. Tom was an excellent host along with Jenny and Nadine. We really felt like family and had our privacy too. We were graciously allowed to store irems in the fridge that was very convenient. I always loved the music played in the dining room. The dinner and drink menu looked awesome and we will have to come a little later in the year to experience those specialties. There is a great feel to the whole place. Tom has done an excellent job and continues to make improvements. The rooms were cozy with inviting sitting areas. We were told we could take peaks at the rooms that weren't occupied. Since we were there all week we were able to check them out. We roomed in #1 and it was very spacious with the largest bathroom and a private porch. Most of the rooms have very quaint gas woodstoves. There is also an upper outside deck to relax and have a drink on which we took advantage of on our first night there when the weather was beautiful. What a delightful stay. We will come back and stay in room 4. It is very airy with a sitting room up a spiral staircase that looks fun and inviting with a cute gas stove. The location was ideal. Right in the heart of town. Within walking distance to everything including a grocery store. It was such a joy to stay here and we definitely recommend it to everyone!!!

My husband and I were so happy with our choice stay at the Black Friar Inn. Friar Tom, owner, and staff were very welcoming and easy going. The room was very comfortable and since it was on a quiet side street we could sleep with our window open with no disturbance. The food for breakfast and dinner was fabulous! Breakfast was included in the room rate and you could just choose whatever you wanted to eat off of the menu! The pub had a very European feel which we enjoyed, but we could also be in our room and not hear any noise from the pub either. This was a perfect selection and I would highly recommend it to any couple looking for a comfortable and reasonable place to spend a few nights in Bar Harbor

Wow. Just... wow. Let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start). My mom, sister and I are on the last stop on our tour of the Maine coast. We arrive at the Black Friar with high expectations. It's an Inn above a pub! Couldn't possibly be more Helena, right? We head inside to check in and see our room. After a short hunt we find the manager who gives us a tour of the Inn. First stop, the "sitting room" - an awkward, windowless room where, I suppose, we could sit if we wanted. Yeah, we won't be wanting. Next! Onward to the pub itself. Inn guests get a 10% discount on food in the pub (nice!) including breakfast (which we are surprised to learn is not complementary. Boo!). The tour continues upstairs. We are led into a room with a queen-sized bed. Remember, I'm here with my mom and sister. There are three of us. Me; Mom; Sister. One; Two; Three. Three people won't fit (comfortably) in a bed designed for two. Seems straightforward, but this headcount just now dawns on our tour guide. "You didn't tell me there were three people," he states accusingly. I assure him I mentioned it on the phone when I booked our reservation (And hello! There have been three people on this bloody tour from the get-go!). He continues to refute and is getting increasingly agitated. As I made the reservations, his wrath is directed at me. Now, we are all adults, so I'd rather skip past the incriminating back-and-forth and move on to potential solutions... but wait, is he calling me a liar? "No, Helen [not my name]. I'm saying that you did NOT tell me this when you called" So... yeah, he is calling me a liar. A lie by omission is still a lie. Didn't Danny Tanner once teach Stephanie that on a very special episode of Full House? But back to the present (increasingly uncomfortable) situation. Unwilling to offer anything resembling a solution, the manager tells us that he will give us a refund if we so choose as there are "plenty of other vacancies in town". With that, he leaves the room. We barely need to glance at one another to confirm we will be taking him up on this offer. Back downstairs, the manager reemerges. He looks a little calmer. Good. He starts to speak (perhaps to apologize?). Alas... "I've been in this industry for eighteen years. I've seen people try to pull stuff like this before. This is NOT my fault!" OK, pause. What exactly would I be trying to "pull"? I'm with my family in a resort town in Maine. This isn't Spring Break in Cancun, buddy. I comment that after eighteen years I'm surprised with his general demeanor towards guests. He comments that his demeanor is "perfectly nice". Mmmmkay. Adios, Grumpy McGee! To add further aggravation, his "refund" is in the form of a check rather than a credit back to the credit card used to pay the initial deposit. This means we have to traipse around Bar Harbor looking for a branch of his small, regional bank in order to get it cashed. Awesome. Pleasure doing business with you. Bottom line: I've stayed in hotels, hostels, guesthouses, B&Bs, tents, cabins, and even a park bench in cities all around the world and I've never been treated this poorly. People this unapologetically inhospitable have no business in the hospitality industry.

Absolutely loved our stay at Black Friar Inn. We had room 3 and barely heard anyone coming or going. Great food for both breakfast and dinner. It's also a good sign when other locals are hanging out at the bar and eating there. Tom and the entire staff are very friendly and willing to give great and honest recommendations. We hope to return soon!
